Half-Life
People used to think that you couldn’t have a good story in a video game if you didn’t switch between different points of view. But Half-Life turned that idea on its head because it had no sequences at all.
Players could move away from NPCs while they were talking, so they could move at their own pace through the story. Half-Life is a gem for a reason, and that reason is that the way it tells stories is unique for its time.
Deus Ex
Deus Ex was a huge step forward for its time. It was a simulation game that made you feel like you were really there, and it’s still impressive today. The game gave players a lot of different ways to reach their goal, which made it hard to decide how to spend their skill points every time.
The players could either be very good at using guns or come up with other ways to deal with threats. No matter what path a player picked, they could be sure that every level in Deus Ex was made to fit their build.
Wolfenstein 3D
Wolfenstein 3D is a classic first-person shooter in which players go through a Nazi base and kill a lot of enemy fighters before facing Hitler in an epic showdown. The game’s fast-paced and fun shooting made it possible for more first-person shooters to become popular.
This was one of many games made by id Software that helped make the genre what it is today. As more and more first-person shooter games came out with the same gameplay, it became clear that Wolfenstein 3D was in many ways the one who started this trend.
Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty spent a long time making games about real-life wars, but for their fourth mainline game, they chose to try something new. The end result was the famous game Modern Warfare, which set the standard for the rest of the games in the series.
Modern Warfare looks at what a modern war would be like in a unique way, and the game’s many famous set pieces are a blast to play in every way. The multiplayer was also a great step in the right direction that got a lot of people interested in this amazing game, and the rest is history.
GoldenEye 007
People thought that systems weren’t a good place for first-person shooters to grow. This changed when GoldenEye 007 came out, which many people know as the first FPS game on platforms to really become a huge hit.
At the time, this game’s couch multiplayer was a thing of beauty. It let friends battle against each other in some tense firefights. Early on, GoldenEye 007’s success was definitely one of the reasons why Rare was held to such high standards.
Doom
Doom is one of the most famous first-person shooter games ever made. Just killing demons in Snake Game is a lot of fun because of how it looks. The music is well-known, and each of the game’s foes is both hard and fun to beat in its own way.
The homemade levels in Doom made the game more fun to play again and again. And the fact that the game is still being changed shows how much people love it. Many people say that this game was a big reason why first-person shooters became popular, which is no small thing.
Half-Life 2
Half-Life was already a big deal. But what the second game brought to the table was completely different. Half-Life 2 is a masterpiece in every way. It has a real physics system that is used in both battle and puzzles.
Even today, the physics system in Half-Life 2 still blows my mind. Very few games have physics systems that are as complicated as the ones in Half-Life 2. Given how amazing it was to play through this great sequel to Half-Life. It’s easy to see why so many people wanted a new one.
System Shock 2
The first System Shock game was pretty good in its own way. But it’s hard to deny that its interface and controls were confusing and haven’t held up well over time. System Shock 2, on the other hand, is a very different story.
The fact that this scary game had survival horror, RPG. And FPS features was a huge accomplishment that has held up in every way. This game is seen as a spiritual predecessor to BioShock, which shows how innovative it was for its time.
Trespasser: Jurassic Park
Trespasser: Jurassic Park is a game that tried to do too much for the time it was made. This game tried to include everything from a simple HUD to a ground-breaking physics system. But it took on more than it could handle and fell apart under its own weight.
Even though the game seemed to fail, many famous game makers have said that Trespasser was an inspiration for their own games. The game also told its story through audio logs, an idea that has been used in other games since then.
Perfect Dark
If GoldenEye 007 was a model for what console shooters could do, Perfect Dark took this idea and made it as good as it could be. There were different ways to fire weapons, and the effects for reloading were pretty cool.
Of course, the online was once again the best part. In Perfect Dark, players could change a lot about the online game. From how the AI behaved to the kinds of weapons that could be used.
